An overview of some of the main approaches to psychotherapy
-
Psychodynamic therapy is an approach that involves creating a deeper understanding of our emotions and psychological processes, it focuses on the unconscious workings as they manifest in our current behaviours. The goals of psychodynamic therapy include client self-awareness and understanding of the influence of past experiences on present behaviour.
-
Existential therapy is part of the humanistic approach to therapy. This focuses on finding meaning and acknowledging the human elements involved in existence, purpose, and death.
-
Client centered therapy (or person-centered therapy) is a non-directive approach to talk therapy that requires the client to actively take the lead of the therapy session while the therapist acts mainly as a source of support. The goals of client centered therapy include, genuineness and congruence through unconditional positive regard and empathetic understanding.

CBT is a short-term approach to therapy that revolves around the notion that our thoughts influence our behaviours, and works by altering maladaptive thought patterns in order to change certain behaviours. It implements worksheets, specific techniques and structure which separates itself from other forms of therapy which require a deeper dive into our past and psyche.
Schema therapy is a form of CBT therapy combining elements of CBT with psychodynamic approaches to alter long term behaviours and beliefs.
